ALCOHOL
Preamble:
New Student Orientation (NSO) is a time of transition and exposure to the Stanford University academic and social environment for new undergraduate students.  Therefore, the University is dedicated to significantly reducing the risks associated with alcohol use for both new students and returning students during this period.

Policy:
Within this context, we have established the following specific policies that are in effect during the NSO period for individual students, residences and student groups

1. At no time should any Stanford student provide, serve or in anyway make alcohol available to any new undergraduate student (freshman or transfer).

2. All student groups/organizations will host only alcohol-free parties or events during Orientation.  This specifically means that no alcohol is to be present, served, or consumed at any student group/organization function during NSO

3. All residences (excluding Row Houses without freshman or transfer residents - - see #6) will host only alcohol-free events during Orientation.  This specifically means that no alcohol is to be present, served, or consumed at any events in undergraduate residences during NSO.

4. Students who are of legal drinking age and who choose to privately consume alcohol are permitted to do so responsibly and in moderation during Orientation, within the parameters and spirit of this NSO Alcohol Policy and Stanford University's Policy on Controlled Substances and Alcohol.

5. The University’s expectation is that all students who attend the Band Run will refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages prior to the Run.  Also, no alcoholic beverages may be present or consumed by any person during the Band Run.

6. On a reviewable basis, Row Houses without freshman or transfer residents may choose to host closed, resident-only social gatherings where alcohol may be responsibly served and consumed by students who are 21 years of age or older.  These gatherings must be registered and operate in accordance with the Stanford Party Planning Guidelines/Polices and Local, Federal and California State laws along with these additional limits:

a. Only beer, wine and malt liquor may be served.  No hard liquor or punch with hard liquor may be served.
b. Gatherings where alcohol is present may not occur on Tuesday, September 16, 2007 due to new student move-in day.
c. Only designated Residence staff can register a social gathering in their Row House.
d. No publicity or signage (electronic or other method) may be used to promote a Row House social gathering.
e. New undergraduate students may not be present at any Row House social gathering.

Consequences for Policy Violations:

Students who violate the Stanford NSO Alcohol Policy must meet with their Residence Dean and may lose housing privileges, and/or may be referred to Judicial Affairs.

Residences that violate the Stanford NSO Alcohol Policy can be placed on alcohol suspension/probation.

Student groups who violate the Stanford NSO Alcohol Policy will be referred to the Dean of Student Affairs and/or the Organization Conduct Board.

If violations of this NSO Alcohol Policy are encountered during the 2008 NSO period, then the University will revoke the expanded privileges in Row Houses for future years.

As a reminder, we have included the University's Fundamental Standard and Policy on Controlled Substances and Alcohol. Your cooperation and support of New Student Orientation is greatly appreciated.

The Fundamental Standard

The Fundamental Standard has set the standard of conduct for students at Stanford since 1896.  It states in part:

Students at Stanford are expected to show both within and without the University such respect for order, morality, personal honor and the rights of others as is demanded of good citizens. Failure to do this will be sufficient cause for removal from the University.

University Policy on Controlled Substances and Alcohol

It is the policy of the University to maintain a drug-free workplace and campus. The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession and/or use of controlled substances or the unlawful possession, use or distribution of alcohol is prohibited on the Stanford campus, in the workplace or as part of the University's activities. The workplace and campus are presumed to include all Stanford premises where the activities of the University are conducted. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary sanctions up to and including termination of employment or expulsion of students. Violations may also be referred to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
