Any group wishing to form as a new Stanford fraternity or sorority is expected to demonstrate that it can meet and maintain a set of standard expectations or criteria developed by the University to assess the strength and readiness of any group proposing to become a new Greek chapter. University recognition as a fraternity or sorority is a privilege that is granted to new groups after considerable review. As the only recognized "subjectively selective" student groups on campus, fraternities and sororities must be prepared to fully meet University expectations for Greek groups and to ensure that the chapter can sustain itself beyond its founding members' tenure as students. The components to be addressed in a proposal for University recognition are quite detailed and demonstrate the level of commitment any interested group must demonstrate. The criteria that will be considered in reviewing such proposals are based on standard University expectations established for existing Greek chapters, both housed and unhoused.
Once the University has recognized a group as a Greek "colony," the colony has a year to: 1) develop an organizational constitution, 2) prepare a written proposal which addresses the "Criteria for New Greek Chapters," and 3) obtain a local advisor who is willing to work with the chapter for its first 2-3 years of operation. Guidelines for developing a chapter constitution are those developed for all Stanford student organizations and can be obtained from the Office of Student Activities. The criteria established for new chapters are as follows.
