Student organizations are asked to refrain from conducting information and recruiting efforts beyond those sponsored by New Student Orientation until the fifth day of the orientation period except for information tables in White Plaza, which are permissible beginning the second day of orientation. Other information tables on campus, speeches at house meetings, singing tours or speeches are not permitted during the first four days of orientation. In addition, student groups are expected to maintain an alcohol-free environment during New Student Orientation; student events with alcohol are not permitted.
The University expects all individual students and student groups to follow the University policies regarding alcohol use during New Student Orientation, September 18-23. We want to work in partnership with you to reach the goal of ensuring a safe and healthy orientation.
As you know, the University is dedicated to eliminating the risks associated with the use of alcohol on our campus throughout the academic year. New Student Orientation is a time of particular concern. Past experience has shown that some new students, particularly freshmen, put themselves and others at serious risk due to alcohol consumption during Orientation.
The focus of New Student Orientation is centered on academic preparation and acclimation to college life. Eliminating alcohol from Orientation will reduce known health and safety risks to new students, and will encourage them to devote time, energy and attention to engaging fully in Orientation activities and creating healthy communities in their new residences.
Within this context, we have established the following specific guidelines that are in effect from September 18-23 for individual students and student groups:
If the University is made aware of individual students and/or student groups who act in violation of the NSO and Stanford’s alcohol policy, they will be referred to a Residence Dean, Judicial Affairs and/or the Dean of Students Office for appropriate action.
As a reminder, we have included the University’s Fundamental Standard and Policy on Controlled Substances and Alcohol. Your cooperation and support of New Student Orientation is greatly appreciated.
The Fundamental Standard has set the standard of conduct for students at Stanford since 1896. It states in part:
Students at Stanford are expected to show both within and without the University such respect for order, morality, personal honor and the rights of others as is demanded of good citizens. Failure to do this will be sufficient cause for removal from the University.
It is the policy of the University to maintain a drug-free workplace and campus. The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession and/or use of controlled substances or the unlawful possession, use or distribution of alcohol is prohibited on the Stanford campus, in the workplace or as part of any of the University’s activities. The workplace and campus are presumed to include all Stanford premises where the activities of the University are conducted. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary sanctions up to and including termination of employment or expulsion of students. Violations may also be referred to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
